Stretching Myself: Becoming a BodyBalance Instructor
Yoga? I’m down dog. The first time I tried Les Mills’ BodyBalance, I knew it was a game changer. Like a Russian nesting doll, instead of constantly looking outside for the answers, I feel like I have unlocked the person I want to be. Similarly having dipped into yoga and meditation, in this class I have found the right combination for me.
Another day, another namaste.๐ง๐ผ♀️ Bodybalance is a holistic hybrid of three particular practices: Yoga, Tai Chi and Pilates. It follows a particular pattern which focuses on stretching and strengthening every part of your body. If you’re looking to increase mobility and build core strength while also massaging your mind, this is the wellbeing workout for you. In this class, mobility, muscle and meditation majestically merge to form a tremendously therepeutic trifecta.
Instructor training took place over two days and focused on the principles, techniques and beliefs that each practice promotes. The Les Mills mantra centers around being part of one tribe. The essence of which is the desire to make the world a healthier place.
We started off with a little introductory activity, sharing our favorite yoga pose and outlining why we wanted to enhance our experience of BodyBalance. I explained how I want to fine tune my flexibility, explore the edges of my comfort zone and subsequently see it stretch. We followed this up with a masterclass of the current BodyBalance release which we had all received 10 days before.
We had all been given one track to learn, this involved learning the music, knowing when to change pose, providing cues to the participants and nailing technique. In order to perfect your practice there is a lot to pack in so I was quite literally flat to the mat all weekend๐ .
I was given a track on twists which focused on rotation of the spine and shoulders. Other tracks focus on hip flexors, core (abdominals and back) and those other mini muscles you never knew you had!
The beauty of BodyBalance is that you are in charge of how far you take each pose depending on where your body is at that day. You can complete a strength workout or if you need a breather you can focus on flexibility. ๐๐ผ♀️
Aside from the physical benefits, there is a guided meditation at the end which allows you to expand your mind in addition to your body. The class gradually winds towards this therepeutic track and it is the ultimate reward to rest your body. ๐
Overall, it was a rigorous, enriching and rewarding weekend which was enhanced by an enthusiastic and energetic instructor. I try to live my life by following the principle of 80/20, it’s all about honing that harmony of health and happiness, finding your own bespoke balance.
It may have taken twenty-nine of my thirty years but this is the closest I have come to finding mine. If you’re looking to give your body the holistic hug that is deserves then quell your quest right now. Take a breath, find your balance and nama-slay your day. ๐ฅ
